At each club shoot we have a cup for the Top Gun and a cup for the Handicap. The handicap starts at 30 then drops as the members average score increases up to 70 at which point no handicap is applied. This gives all members a good chance of winning. Please note that the first card of new members will be a scratch score to give a basis for a handicap. Handicap will then take the average of the last three score cards and roll forward.

50 bird and 100 bird shoots are charged at £20 and £40 respectively and includes the cost of clays, trappers and a small amount for the charity pot. Optional DTL competitions will attract an additional charge of £10 each.

Notes on the handicap system

Every member is given a handicap ranging in value from a maximum of 30 down to 0.

Your handicap is calculated by taking the average of your last three scores (number of broken clays) from a base figure of 70.

Examples:
Scores of 46, 54 and 60 gives an average of 53, so your handicap is 17 (70 – 53)
Scores of 69, 68 and 75 gives an average of 70, so your handicap is 0 (70 – 70)

Your Handicap is checked and adjusted if required before each shoot.

The handicap allocated to a new member of their first shoot is scratch (0) and adjusted on subsequent shoots.

Members are divided in to two leagues A and B according to the hit percentage acquired from previous shoots. Those in league A compete for the Top Gun Cup while those in leage B complete for the Level Shots Cup. Everyone with a valid handicap is also entered in to the Handicap Cup competition.

There are two sets of points awarded to each shooter at every shoot; one for the Top Gun competition and one for the Handicap Cup competition.

Your score is the number of clays you shoot and break.

Points for the Top Gun and Level Shots competitions are awarded according to your score only, while points for the Handicap competition are awarded according to your score PLUS your handicap. In all cases, 10 points are allocated for the first place, down to 2 points for 9th place with all other shooters receiving 1 point each regardless of their place.

Top Gun, Level Shots and Handicap Cup competition points are added up throughout the year. At the end of year, the shooter with the most Top Gun points is awarded the Top Gun trophy, the shooter with the most Level Shots points is awarded the Level Shots trophy and the shooter with the most Handicap Cup points is awarded the Handicap trophy. The trophies are awarded annualy and may be kept for the following year. At each competition, the Nettleton Cup and Level Shots Cup is presented to the shooter with the highest Top Gun and Level Shots score respectively and the Handicap Cup is presented to the shooter with the highest Handicap score. The cups may be kept until the next competition. It should be noted however, that the constitution states that members gaining 1st, 2nd & 3rd places in the Top Gun and Level Shots competition will have their handicaps added for inclusion in the Handicap Cup but will be excluded from any winning position. They will score 1 point each towards their Handicap Cup total.
